Steel slabs travel by rail: Inter-rail wins regional tender

Another step forward in sustainable logistics: Inter-rail has won the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region tender for the rail transport of steel slabs, semi-finished products destined for rolling, from the port of Monfalcone to the Aussa-Corno industrial area. This service confirms Inter-rail’s strategic role in regional logistics and in enhancing the rail transport of heavy goods.

Thanks to the award of the tender, 10 rail convoys will depart each week, each with a capacity of 1,600 tonnes of slabs, for a total of approximately 900,000 tonnes per year. This is an impressive volume, which translates into a concrete advantage for the entire transport system: the use of rail will remove 39,000 lorries per year from the region’s roads, reducing heavy traffic, cutting CO₂ emissions and improving road safety.

The initiative is the natural evolution of a process that began in the early 2000s with an initial trial and continued in 2018 thanks to the support of the Region, which decided to make it permanent through a call for tenders to select a logistics operator. The award of the service to Inter-rail testifies to our company’s solidity and reliability in the field of rail logistics, as well as our ongoing commitment to providing efficient and sustainable transport solutions.

‘The competitiveness of any industrial activity today necessarily depends on sustainability,’ commented Tullio Bratta, chairman of Inter-rail. ‘With this strengthened commitment to rail transport, we want to reconcile economic development that benefits and does not conflict with local communities.’ This is a key concept for Inter-rail, which continues to invest in intermodal logistics and innovative solutions to provide local businesses with a reliable, environmentally friendly freight transport system that meets market needs.

Inter-rail handles over 5,000 freight wagons every year, moving around 2.7 million tonnes of materials ranging from steel to wood, food and agriculture to chemicals. With an established presence in logistics flows between Northern Italy and Central Europe, our company confirms its role as a leader in rail freight transport and in the transition to increasingly sustainable logistics.
