The Inter-rail headquarters in the Palazzina Masieri: our place in history

Inter-rail has chosen a special location for its headquarters: the Palazzina Rizzi Cernuschi, a masterpiece of modernist architecture designed in 1949 by Friulian architect Angelo Masieri. This building, strongly inspired by the avant-garde of the time and the teachings of masters such as Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright, has been restored to its former glory thanks to careful conservation work by architect Pietro Valle.

The work, which respected the original lines, has enhanced the architectural structure of the building, restoring its identity and design vision without compromising aesthetics, functionality or efficiency. The ground floor, once divided into three commercial units, has been redesigned as a single, bright open space, just as Masieri had imagined it. This space now houses workstations, a meeting room and executive offices in an environment that combines elegance and rationality.

Another central element of the project was the energy upgrading of the building, combining respect for the past with the sustainability requirements of the present. New high-efficiency windows and doors were installed, an internal insulation system was created and a 20 KW photovoltaic system was installed on the roof, hidden from view to preserve the original aesthetics. The systems have also been integrated with invisible solutions, concealing them in the floating floor and false ceiling to maintain the visual cleanliness of the spaces.

The furnishings fit perfectly into this context, with a design that recalls the pure and functional forms of the period. The choice of Fantoni’s Quaranta5 line, designed by Gino Valle with Herbert Ohl in 1968, expresses a workplace philosophy based on practicality, order and formal simplicity. The characteristic 45° cut of the tops visually eliminates thickness, creating pure, harmonious volumes in line with the essentiality of Masieri’s architecture.

This headquarters is not just a workplace for Inter-rail, but a true symbol of continuity between the past and the future. We have chosen to invest in the restoration of an important heritage site in the city of Udine and transform it into a modern, efficient and sustainable place, that represents our vision of logistics: not just the movement of goods, but innovation, responsibility and respect for the local area.
